Finding ways to motivate contributors is one of the most challenging issues in building a vibrant Collaborative translation community, especially in situations where they are not remunerated for their work.
Volunteers are often partly motivated by a desire to establish prestige and credibility within a community of peers. The Point System caters to that need, by providing a precise, quantitative way of measuring the amount of work that an individual has contributed to the community.
The exact nature of the Point System may vary from community to community (ex: number of words translated, reputation score, number of edits made, etc.), but the exact details of the measure probably matter less than the mere existence of some measure.
