Open Alternatives

Context

It has been decided that a crowd will translate the content. The quality of the translation must be fit for purpose before it is published and the organization has an interest in having as many crowd members involved in the process as possible. Individual contributions are not retributed.

Problem description

The contribution of any single user can be of an unfit for purpose quality.

Solution

Collect an undefined number of contributions before selecting one that is fit for publishing.

In-House Revision is one of the mechanisms used for the selection of a translation after implementing unlimited redundant alternatives.

Real-life examples

Facebook lets its users suggest multiple translations for each translation unit. Crowdin and Launchpad’s Rosetta also enable their users to make multiple suggestions for each translation unit.
In academia, the combination of iterative autopublished and open alternative has also been suggested by Exton e al (2009) and Wasala et al (2012) as means to increase the quality of crowdsourced translations.
